Registration Coordinator (Regular, Full-Time)
Registration and Collections 

Reporting to the Registrar, Permanent Collection and Loan, the Registration Coordinator provides administrative support to the Registration department and assists the Registrar, Permanent Collection and Loans with registration projects as assigned. The Coordinator is part of the Collection Registrar team focusing on museum acquisitions and the permanent collection.

Responsibilities

Knowledge of early American decorative arts would also be a great asset. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in expanding narratives around the decorative arts, with a broad intellectual curiosity and a strong interest in connecting time periods and cultures in the context of an encyclopedic museum. The candidate will also be a dynamic professional who has experience in some or all of the following areas: innovative research and interpretation; development of public or private collections; commitment to broad and inclusive audience engagement through exhibitions, installations, scholarly lectures, public presentations, and community partnerships. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide collaborative support for permanent collection installations for the Geffen Galleries – a new building to display and imaginatively reinterpret LACMA’s permanent collections. Participate in ongoing rotations including collection research, object selection, layout development, and installation. Prepare interpretive content for Collections Online and other formats.
  • Foster and contribute to LACMA’s ambitious exhibition program, including providing support for large-scale exhibition projects under the guidance of Senior Curatorial staff.
  • Conduct collection-focused research for proposed acquisitions and supports these acquisitions with presentations and written justifications.

Conservation Center

Reporting to the Senior Conservator of the Conservation Center, the Andrew W. Mellon Fellow will work on the conservation of works of art on paper, photographs, books and/or archives. Associate Mountmaker (Regular Part-Time)
Conservation Center

Reporting to the Mountmaking Manager of the Conservation center, the Associate Mountmaker is responsible for fabricating and installing the structures that safely support collections of artworks and artifacts while they are on exhibit. This is a hands-on opportunity with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. LACMA hosts numerous exhibitions, installations, and loans per year from its encyclopedic collection, and is dedicated to the acquisition, conservation, display, and interpretation of these objects.

Responsibilities

  • Proficiency in metal fabrication using the following equipment: TIG welder, drill press, milling machine, grinders, oxy-acetylene torch, and bandsaw.
  • Must possess accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of proper art handling protocols.

  • Must be able to organize time and meet deadlines.
  • Will be required to lift heavy objects at times.

Associate Conservator (Regular Full-Time)
Conservation Center

Reporting to the Senior Conservator, Painting the Associate Conservator has a broad range of responsibilities, and requires expertise in the examination, preservation, treatment, and interpretation of paintings.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses paintings for treatment and makes recommendations to the Senior Conservator for discussion and approval with Curatorial departments.
  • Cleans paintings using various techniques including traditional solvents as well as aqueous and dry-cleaning methods.
  • Restores lacunae with various types and methods of filling and inpainting.
  • Undertakes surface treatments such as applying appropriate coatings when determined to be necessary.
  • Recommends and performs structural treatments such as tear repair and lining.
  • Remains current with research in the conservation field to promote conservation treatments of the highest current standards.
  • Interacts with the Science and Photography sections to analyze and document paintings before and during treatment.
  • Evaluate and recommend the best preservation circumstances for paintings in the Museum and its storage areas.
  • Writes comprehensive examination reports, treatment proposals, and final reports that explain findings and procedures to Sr. Conservator to review and to curators and other professionals, as well as interact with curators and other professionals as treatment progresses.
  • Writes reports for possible acquisitions which explain technical aspects and judgments of conditions reviewed by Sr. Conservator, which can be fully understood by conservators, curators, and other individuals, including donors.
  • Collaborates with other departments such as Curatorial, Registrar, Art Handling, and Collection Management in the planning and undertaking of exhibitions and loans which may require recommending treatments, environmental specifications, and conditions for safe transit and display of the artwork.
  • Included in the duties of exhibitions and loans is the accurate preparation and review of condition reports for incoming and outgoing exhibitions and loans, and the possibility of courier duties.
  • Proposes annual budgets with Sr. Conservator for the treatment of paintings along with the necessary supplies, equipment, and personnel.
  • Helps to oversee schedules and deadlines and contributes to upkeep of spaces.
  • Conducts tours and gives lectures; publishes and presents research with contributions to professional journals, collection catalogs, and social media.
  • Practices all safety standards and regulations concerning workplace, tools, and materials such as solvents, and follows local and LACMA safety guidelines while ensuring that others do the same.

Assistant Director of Annual Giving (Regular Full-Time)

The Assistant Director of Annual Giving oversees the annual giving program for LACMA. This program currently involves ~350 donors and achieves more than $2 million in contributions. The program includes oversight of the Avant-Garde young patrons; Curator’s Circle; the museum’s annual LACMA Fund—which all generate unrestricted support for the museum. The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing the overall program strategy including direct mail and electronic fundraising, in order to grow the supporter base, renew memberships and upgrade gifts to reach a goal over time of $5 million in contributions.

Responsibilities

  • Manages staff and provides oversight for all Avant-Garde, Curator’s Circle, and LACMA Fund administration. 
  • Tracks and manages expense budgets, and monitors income reports for the Annual Giving Programs
  • Develops an annual strategic plan for growing the annual giving program and defining accountability for the staff in the department
  • Oversees the strategy development, design and implementation of the annual LACMA Fund direct mail and online giving solicitations to increase the number of donors and prospects

Qualifications

  • At least two years of relevant experience in a high volume and customer service focused setting 
  • Background in Art History preferred
  • Strong skills in ticketing software, preferably in Tessitura
  • Basic math skills
  • Must operate with attention to detail and strong organizational skills while managing a continuous workflow 
  • Open availability including holidays, nights, and weekends

Volunteering is a unique form of philanthropy: a gift of unrestricted time and expertise to the museum. Volunteering provides a means for members to bond over shared artistic passions, and participate in group tours, lectures, receptions and travel. There are a number of ways to give of your time to help LACMA. 

Museum Service Council

The Museum Service Council provides support to museum administrative staff, curators, and educational and family programs. Our volunteers work in the libraries, the Welcome Center, and the Boone Children's Gallery, help staff Family Day activities, act as hosts for special events, and assist in the museum stores. As a benefit, council members receive special invitations to private exhibition tours, activities and lectures with eminent curators. 

The volunteer selection and training process occurs as needed, usually once per year. Stay tuned to this page for updates.

Docent Council

Members of the Docent Council engage with visitors of all ages through guided tours and casual dialogue to make works of art accessible for all. We are committed to inclusivity, access, and equity, and we believe that the Docent Council should represent the diversity of Los Angeles.

An art background is not required in order to be a docent. Prospective docents should have an interest in learning about art, working with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, and facilitating positive museum experiences. In addition to working with visitors, docents enjoy an extensive program of continuing education provided by staff members and local experts. Members of the Docent Council perform a unique form of philanthropy by donating their time in a way that supports LACMA and the visitors it serves.
