Jay DeFeo, like many of her contemporaries in the Bay Area Beat Movement, drew great inspiration from jazz music. It was as if their work sought to crystallize the energy of the music. DeFeo even paid homage to the sonic art form by frequently titling her works after the jazz pieces she loved. In 1959, her radiant work The Jewel debuted in Dilexi Gallery, located above the Jazz Workshop where that same year Cannonball Adderly and company recorded their blazing version of “You Got It!” These soundwaves might have likely soaked through the floorboards to vibrate in unison with DeFeo’s work.
