Departures & Arrivals: Stories of Art Across Boundaries
War, persecution, and political upheaval disrupted the lives of so many twentieth-century European artists, and the effects appear in their work. Starting with a Max Beckmann painting of two figures huddled in a dark bar during the late years of the Nazi occupation and continuing up through David Hockney's sunny early years in Los Angeles, follow modern artists as they cross borders geographic and aesthetic. The tour starts on the third floor of the BCAM building, in the first gallery featuring work from 1900 to the 1920s.
