In celebration of the exhibition Mapping the Infinite: Cosmologies Across Cultures and exploring the themes of art and science as part of PST ART, Art & Music presents Sonic Borders, a soundscape experience by Mexican composer, performer, and artist Guillermo Galindo.
Sonic Borders is based on an immersive 260-minute, 8-channel sound installation which draws inspiration from the Tonalpohualli, an ancient Mesoamerican calendar based on the cycles of Venus. In the original iteration of this piece, eight distinct sonic devices built from detritus picked at the U.S.-Mexico border were strategically placed throughout the gallery, creating a dynamic soundscape that transforms over four hours and 20 minutes.
The live performance of this installation includes controlled improvisation that responds to the spatial arrangement and tonal evolution of the original piece, allowing visitors to craft their own experience through movement and duration of stay. Each sonic device broadcasts from a specific location, enabling listeners to discover different perspectives as they move through the space.
The original installation of this work is now part of Crystal Bridges permanent collection and has been travelling to different museums through the U.S. as part of the Art Bridges Program.
