Are you a resident of Willowbrook or the surrounding areas of South Central, Compton, Watts, Westmont? Are you interested in exploring your creative side and learning the art of modern filmmaking?

Apply for Aspect Ratio, LACMA's FREE 8-week filmmaking course that takes place March 2025 through May 2025, based out of the Willowbrook Library.

At Aspect Ratio, you'll explore filmmaking as an artistic outlet, enhancing understanding of art concepts and methods, and learn how to break down footage and film work into assets for personal, artistic, and social media purposes and beyond. You will walk away with the essential tools and resources needed to develop and complete a short film while being introduced to professionals and career pathways in the film industry.

We'll be using the latest iPhones as well as analog filmmaking kits to shoot films in various perspectives and aspect ratios, including 16:9 widescreen, 4:3, 1.33x anamorphic, and 9:16 for social media. Throughout the course, you'll delve into local stories new and old, utilizing modern as well as cameraless filmmaking techniques and activating archival stories and materials to examine the history of Willowbrook and the surrounding neighborhoods. The goal is for you to create films that are meaningful to you and reflect on the places, people, and experiences that matter most.

Student films created as part of Aspect Ratio will be screened in Willowbrook, at LACMA, and beyond. Participants will receive a modest stipend for completing the course. All materials and equipment will be provided.

Participants are required to attend all 8 classes, a works-in-progress screening in Willowbrook, and a final showcase screening at LACMA.
