Ed Ruscha: Standard presents a selection of work by the quintessential Los Angeles-based artist that spans six decades. The exhibition features nearly one hundred pieces by Ruscha drawn largely from LACMA's permanent holdings, which include more than three hundred works by the artist. Ruscha’s art depicts everyday iconography–gas stations, street signs, billboards, commercial packaging–yet often triggers philosophical reflection about the relationship between words, objects, and ideas.

Working confidently in many media, including painting, photography, printmaking, drawing, and film, Ruscha is recognized as one of the most important artists of our time. The artist's influence can be seen in graphic design, cinema, architectural theory, and urban history.

Ed Ruscha: Standard highlights generous donations of the artist’s work to LACMA’s permanent collection over the years. Coinciding with this exhibition is LACMA’s 2012 Art + Film Gala on October 27, honoring Ed Ruscha and director Stanley Kubrick, with director Steven Spielberg paying tribute to the late filmmaker.

This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
