Performers
Museum of Traffic
LA Times Central Courtyard | 8:15 pm–12 am
Along with coordinating projections and music to accompany Gotham Chopra‘s presentation (see below), Museum of Traffic will be active throughout the night bringing a variety of sounds and images to the LATCC. MoT’s resident DJ will be performing sets from 8:15–8:45 and 9:15–10 pm, flanked by video projections on both The Engine (to be set up along Ahmanson’s donor wall) and the Art of the Americas north wall. The projections will feature material associated with Heroes and Villains along with clips from 1970s and '80s Indian horror films and live footage from the party itself.
Gotham Chopra
LA Times Central Courtyard | 8:45–9:15 pm
From a stage in front of the Ahmanson's donor wall on the LATCC, Gotham Chopra will be presenting Kali: Mistress of Death, a comic he co-wrote with his father. The Engine will serve as his backdrop with images from the comic along with music coordinated by Museum of Traffic. Includes a foreword concerning the development of the Indian comic book industry.
Voxhaul Broadcast
BP Grand Entrance | 9:15–10 pm
The four-piece band out of Orange County will be performing soul-infused rock songs from their new EP Fact Fiction and Turquoise along with favorites from their previous release Rotten Apples on stage in front of Urban Light in the BP Grand Entrance. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a buzz band to watch in 2008, Voxhaul Broadcast recently took home the prize for Best Indie Band at Summerfest.
Kim Anh
Art of the Americas | 10 pm–12 am
The Los Angeles native is a DJ, musician, and promoter who has shared the bill with Katy Perry and Lady Gaga among others in Los Angeles, New York, and Paris. Also half of the electronic duo Saint Le Roq and founder of Booby Trap!, a critically acclaimed disco-infused party that was named in LA Weekly's Best of Issue for 2009 nightlife, Kim will bring her indie electronic mixes to Art of Americas Plaza Level for two sets: 10–10:45 pm and 11:15 am–12 am.
Installations
The Engine
LA Times Central Courtyardn | 8:15 pm–12 am
A much more attractive option than bringing in just any old screen, The Engine provides the perfect backdrop for the Gotham Chopra presentation and will also feature projections throughout the night by Museum of Traffic. The 2000-pound steel sculpture/mobile movie theater hybrid is as thrilling as the content that graces its screen.
Mindshare Labs
Art of the Americas | 8:15 pm–12 am
Having recently displayed their work at the TED and Gel conferences along with a Yo-Yo Ma concert at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Mindshare Labs has gone above and beyond their monthly contributions to the Mindshare events in downtown Los Angeles. Featured as “Innovators ’09” in the Los Angeles Times, Mindshare Labs are a collective of artists that focus on taking advantage of new technologies to create interactive art and real-time games. More than a dozen of their members are coordinating at least ten installations to be featured in the Art of the Americas building, including established favorites Laser Maze, ShadowSmoke, Flickr Photo Booth, and Game Table, along with new projects.
Glass Garage Gallery
Art of the Americas | 8:15 pm–12 am
With the help of Henry Lien of Glass Garage Gallery, a number of artists are lending a hand to add to the décor of the Art of the Americas space. Approximately a dozen surrealist works will adorn the walls to further celebrate the Heroes and Villains/Halloween vibe, including works by Steven Kenny, Margo Selski, and Leigh Wen-Cheng.
Costume Contest
BP Grand Entrance | 10:45–11:15 pm
Taking place on a stage/runway in front of Urban Light, the costume contest will take on a vastly different look this year. Delegates will scope the party for the best representatives of three categories to compete in the contest. Ten contestants will be chosen from each category to strut their stuff on stage in the hopes of being selected by a panel of judges to advance to the round of three. The round of three will then be introduced to the crowd and another vote will ensue among the judges and audience to determine the winner.
Categories: Best Hero, Best Villain, Most Creative
Prizes: Millennium Biltmore Hotel Los Angeles stays, Border Grill/Ciudad gift certificates, limited-edition Heroes and Villains prints, hand-signed BUA posters, Los Angeles Magazine Circles membership, Machine Projects gift certificate, Firm Body Evolution day passes.
Open Bar featuring Dos Equis, Malibu Family Wines, Pernod Absinthe, Honest Tea, and more!

Young Directors Night

The Eighth Annual Young Directors Night was once again an incredible success, completely selling out LACMA’s Bing Theater. A compilation of Muse members, artists, directors, luminaries, friends, and family filled both the screening and A + D Museum for an evening of eating, drinking, perusing, and viewing.
During the happy hour, guests enjoyed ice cold Grolsch, a selection of Kenwood Vineyard wine, and a delicate array of appetizers created especially for the event by Border Grill & Ciudad Catering.
This year saw the screening of eight short films by up-and-coming directors from the Los Angeles area. After a Q&A between the directors and four industry luminaries, Adrian Castagna's Argentinean film El Ojo Unico was voted the recipient of the second annual Art of Film award, winning two tickets to the Santa Barbara Film Festival in 2010. Following the screenings, audience members interacted with the directors while sipping custom-made cocktails featuring VeeV vodka and nibbling on desserts provided by Melissa's Produce.
Big thanks to our sponsors, including The Rundown, Los Angeles Magazine and you, the most important ingredient in Muse, for making this year's YDN as triumphant as ever!
