Monktet

The 2009 Friday Night Jazz series closes with the nine-piece Monktet.  Originally founded by arranger/composer/saxophonist John Magruder in the early eighties, and reenergized by his wife and collaborator Joy Magruder, the Monktet plays the music of Thelonius Monk, as arranged by John Magruder and others, as well as Magruder's original compositions. The Monktet has played in leading Southern California jazz clubs including the Jazz Bakery and Spazio, along with performances and clinics for universities and music programs.

Inga Swearingen celebrates Johnny Mercer

Vocalist Inga Swearingen presents a special evening celebrating Johnny Mercer's 100th anniversary. Swearingen is best known from her work with Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion broadcasts and concerts. She has performed around the world at such prestigious venues as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Tanglewood, and Carnegie Hall. "She has the knack for making even complicated musical trajectories sound natural and flowing," writes jazz critic Joe Woodard.

Larry Karush Quartet

Larry Karush is an improvising pianist/composer with roots in jazz, twentieth-century western music, African-based percussion, and the music of North India, and has performed with John Abercrombie, Jane Ira Bloom, Eddie Gomez, and Bennie Wallace and Oregon. "Karush draws together such disparate elements as bluegrass banjo, stride, tinges of Erik Satie, country and the blues. John B. Williams

Williams may be best known as the bass player on the Arsenio Hall Show and prior to that on Doc Severinson's Tonight Show Band, but this multi-talented musician has spent his distinguished career working with a who's who of jazz legends including Nancy Wilson (for over twenty-five years), Bennie Maupin, The Manhattan Transfer, Billy Cobham, and Michael Wolff.

"L.A. Jazz Treasure Award" - Snooky Young

LACMA and the Los Angeles Jazz Society proudly present the inaugural L.A. Jazz Treasure Award to jazz trumpet legend Snooky Young. The evening features a special tribute band comprised of Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and Tonight Show band members. Mr. Young recently turned ninety and is a recent NEA Jazz Master awardee. Young was lead trumpeter of the Jimmie Lunceford band from 1939 to 1942 and has played with Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band. His longest engagement was with the Tonight Show Band from 1967 through 1992. Young is still playing and recording with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

The Kathleen Grace Band

Based in Los Angeles, the Kathleen Grace Band (KGB) was born out of a desire to fuse the musical language of jazz with the storytelling of the American folk tradition.  Grace in her capacity as singer, songwriter and producer draws the listener in with vocal harmonies, grooves and textures. She has performed at festivals in Europe, the U.S., and South America and was a finalist in the 2004 Montreux International Jazz Vocal Competition.

Founding member of the genre-bending group, Kneebody, saxophonist and composer Ben Wendel has toured the world with such diverse artists as Cuban drumming legend Ignacio Berroa, Thelonius Monk Piano Competition Winner Tigran Hamasyan, and hip hop artist Snoop Dogg. His first solo album Simple Song was recently released on Sunnyside Records in March 2009. Wendel also serves as Adjunct Professor of Jazz Studies at USC.

Esther Segovia

Tango singer Esther Segovia began her career as the lead vocalist for the folklore group Romantico Sur. She has recorded a number of albums, including a dream recording project with El Maestro, Jose Luis "Pepe" Motta, in her homeland of Buenos Aires. This production is a collection of unforgettable songs within the Tango genre like "Sus Ojos Se Cerraron," "Garufa," and "Soy La Segovia, Soy El Gotan," written by Argentinean composer Lito Solanas.
