This season's Art & Music concerts celebrated five of LACMA's exhibitions with some of the world's leading musicians. The eclectic series featured trumpeter Nicholas Payton, the African ensemble Babá Ken Okulolo and the Nigerian Brothers, harpsichordist Lucinda Carver, the Calder String Quartet, and one of today's leading new music ensembles, Xtet. This year's Art & Music concerts concluded with a work commissioned by LACMA celebrating the Pompeii and the Roman Villa exhibition, entitled Frescoes and Ash, by composer Victoria Bond.
The Art & Music concert series is supported in part by the Estates of James B. and Jane C. Welton, the Aaron Copland Fund, Inc., the Austrian Consulate General, Los Angeles, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles and the Campania Region.

In celebration of the exhibition Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture around the Bay of Naples
Los Angeles's new music group Xtet is now in its twenty-first season. The renowned contemporary ensemble returns to LACMA performing works by modern Italian masters Berio, Dallapiccola, and Fedele. The concert also features the world premiere of a work commissioned by LACMA: Frescoes and Ash, by composer Victoria Bond, in celebration of the museum's Pompeii exhibition.

Calder Quartet

In celebration of the exhibition Franz West, To Build a House You Start with the Roof: Work, 1972–2008
“The up-and-coming Calder String Quartet, quite possibly the finest—and certainly the most adventurous—American chamber group" (Alan Rich, Bloomberg News ) makes its LACMA debut in a concert celebrating the work of Viennese artist and sculptor Franz West. The concert includes music by Austrian composers Anton Webern and Beat Furrer, including the U.S premiere of Furrer’s 1st String Quartet, along with Christopher Rouse’s String Quartet #1 and Ryan Carter’s Grip. “In an astonishingly short time, the Calder Quartet has become the American string quartet to watch."

Nicholas Payton Quintet

In celebration of the Basquiat gallery/BCAM. Jazz trumpet virtuoso Nicholas Payton celebrates the influence of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker on legendary painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. Payton’s technical virtuosity first turned heads when he burst onto the scene as a New Orleans teen, and he has continued to captivate audiences with recordings and tours with such artists as Doc Cheatham, Christian McBride, Joe Henderson, and Elvin Jones. His latest release, Into the Blue, “is full of inspired improvisations, original compositions, modern urban and Latin grooves that reveal an incisive creative intelligence.”— The Guardian, U.K.

Babá Ken Okulolo and the Nigerian Brothers

In celebration of the exhibition Tradition as Innovation in African Art.Nigerian master musician Babá Ken Okulolo and the Nigerian Brothers are among the few top contemporary Nigerian musicians whose roots extend deep into traditional African folk and highlife music. Okulolo, best known for his long association with King Sunny Adé and other leading African musicians, brings the group’s tight vocal harmonies, intertwining acoustic guitars, and indigenous hand percussion to LACMA for a special concert celebrating West African sounds.

Lucinda Carver with Elizabeth Blumenstock and Inna Faliks

In celebration of the exhibition Hearst the Collector.
Celebrated harpsichordist and music director Lucinda Carver performs works of J.S. Bach, joined by baroque violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock. The second half of the evening will feature pianist Inna Faliks performing the West Coast premiere of 13 Ways of Looking at the Goldberg, which features contemporary variations on Bach by composers William Bolcom, David Del Tredici, Lukas Foss, Fred Hersch, Jennifer Higdon, Tania Leon, and others.
