Children's art classes emphasize creative problem-solving and experimentation with a variety of media. In addition to art-making, classes include gallery activities and the viewing of original works of art from the museum's permanent collection or special exhibitions. Enrollment for each class is limited; registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.


Children Ages 3 1/2 to 5 and Their Family Members
These sessions offer very young children and their parents a variety of experiences, including storytelling, observation activities, and art-making workshops.

Lines, Lines, Lines
Young artists and their family members discover lines in art while exploring an array of materials and art-making tools with artist Kady Hoffman.

Five Saturdays: September 13, 20, 27, October 4, 18, 2008
11 am–noon or 12:30–1:30 pm

NexGen members $130, one child and adult, $50 per additional family member; nonmembers $140, one child and adult, $55 per additional family member. Enrollment is limited to 20 participants. Art materials and parking fees are included in tuition.


Children Ages 6 to 9
Inspired by the museum’s incredible collection, students discover their own creativity and problem-solving skills to produce original works of art.

Mythology in Art
Explore art that reflects various myths, beliefs, and legends while learning about the stories and mythologies that helped shape art and culture in various times and places. In the studio create mythic heroes, villains, ritualistic icons, and imaginative creatures that are made in response to our own beliefs, holidays, and other celebrations.

Art and Expression
Create magnificent mixed media masterpieces inspired by the Los Angelenos/Chicano Painters of L.A. exhibition. A variety of techniques using papers, paints, and pastels will be explored resulting in large works of art rich in texture, color, and expression. With artist Heather Conyers.

11 am–1 pm

NexGen members $100; nonmembers $110. Enrollment is limited to 20 participants. Art materials and parking fees are included in tuition.


Children Ages 10 to 13
Participants study art objects in the galleries while working in a variety of expressive media. The classes emphasize creative problem-solving, observation, skills, and art-making techniques.

L.A. Painters
Explore the work of painters such as Gilbert "Magu" Luján and Diane Gamboa of the exhibition Los Angelenos/Chicano Painters of L.A. Young painters will observe and apply styles, techniques, and themes in their unique paintings with artist Rogelio Acevedo.

Intergenerational Classes
Perfect for families or adults on their own, intergenerational classes present to students of nearly all ages the opportunity to learn about art and make art at the museum together.

Art in Person
What does it mean to see art firsthand? Explore the experience of looking at art and how art communicates through line, shape, scale, color, and texture. Back in the studio, incorporate these ideas in your own work. With artist Elonda Billera.
