Children's art classes emphasize creative problem-solving and experimentation with a variety of media. In addition to art-making, classes include gallery activities and the viewing of original works of art from the museum's permanent collection or special exhibitions.


Children Ages 3 1/2 to 5 and Their Family Members
These sessions offer very young children and their parents a variety of experiences, including storytelling, observation activities, and art-making workshops.

The Powers of Paint
Five Saturdays, July 24, 31, August 7, 14, 21 | 11 am–12:30 pm
Explore the powers of paint with artist Kady Hoffman. Paint on textured papers, learn to use brushes and other fun tools like twigs, and see what happens when you blend colors.
NexGen members plus one adult $120, $50 per additional family member; nonmembers plus one adult $130, $55 per additional family member

Lines, Shapes, and Color
Five Saturdays, October 9, 16, 23, 30, November 6
11 am–12:30 pm
Young artists will explore how lines, shapes, and color come together to make dynamic works of art. With artist Peggy Hasegawa.

Children Ages 6 to 9
Inspired by the museum’s incredible collection, students discover their own creativity and problem-solving skills to produce original works of art.

Drawing Expressively
Five Sundays, October 10, 17, 24, 31, November 7 | 11 am–1 pm
Inspired by Abstract Expressionist artists, students will use full body motion to create impulsive and expressive drawings. With artist Rogelio Acevedo.
NexGen members $100; nonmembers $110

Children Ages 10 to 13
Participants study art objects in the galleries while working in a variety of expressive media. The classes emphasize creative problem-solving, observation skills, and art-making techniques.

Techniques of Asian Art
Five Sundays, October 10, 17, 24, 31, November 7 | 11 am–1 pm
Inspired by the collection of Korean and Japanese art, students will discover brush, ink, printmaking, and other techniques to make their own Asian-inspired artwork. With artist Josh Peters.
NexGen members $100; nonmembers $110
Art materials and parking fees included in tuition; limited enrollment.


Intergenerational Classes for Students
Ages 5 to 105
Perfect for families or adults on their own, intergenerational classes present to students of nearly all ages the opportunity to learn about art and make art at the museum together.

Girls Rule
Five Saturdays, October 9, 16, 23, 30, November 6 | 11 am–1 pm
Learn about ancient goddesses and modern masters while exploring the museum for artworks made by or about women or girls. In the studio, you and your family will make your own masterpieces exploring a variety of materials.
NexGen members plus one adult $150, $50 per additional family member; nonmembers plus one adult $160, $60 per additional family member.
Art materials and parking fees included in tuition; limited enrollment.


FAQ

  • No prior art-making experience is necessary.
  • To enroll, call the LACMA box office at 323 857-6010 or send in the Class Enrollment Form.
  • Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited enrollment.
  • Effective September 1, 2010, students enrolling in a class three weeks or less before a class begins need to pay with cash, credit card or money order. Checks will not be accepted.
  • All art supplies will be provided for the class.
  • We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes.
  • Refunds will only be granted if the class is canceled. Refunds cannot be given in the case of a missed class or if you elect to withdraw from the class after it has begun.
