LACMA offers classes to adults on weekends and on weekdays. Adults may also participate in intergenerational classes held for students from ages 5 to 105!


Weekend Classes

Sketching from the Collection—Gallery Session
Five Saturdays: July 18, 25, August 1, 8, 15 | 11 am–1:30 pm
Students will explore the elements of design and the differences between eastern and western art forms. With artist Michael Wright.
Members $145; nonmembers $155
Five-week session; limited enrollment; art materials included in tuition.

Drawing—Gallery Session
Five Sundays: July 19, 26, August 2, 9, 16 | 11 am–1:30 pm
The museum's permanent collection serves as the classroom where you will discover ways of looking at art. Focused on the human form, the class is designed to make draftsmanship accessible to all. With artist David Schoffman.
Members $145; nonmembers $155
Five-week session; limited enrollment; art materials included in tuition.

Watercolor in the Fall
Five Saturdays: September 12, October 3, 10, 17, 24
11 am–1:30 pm
Emphasizing the fall light, use the museums grounds and permanent collection to paint with watercolors. With artist Michael Wright.
Members $145; nonmembers $155
Five-week session; limited enrollment; art materials included in tuition.

Water Soluble Oil Painting—Studio Session
Five Saturdays: September 12, October 3, 10, 17, 24
11 am–2 pm
This class is designed to introduce basic oil painting techniques and color theory. Through color mixing exercises to learn about the palette and observations of the modern art collection, we will create sketches in oil and a final painting. With artist Shannon Green.
Members $200; nonmembers $220

Portraits through the Ages
Five Saturdays: May 30, June 6, 20, 27, July 11
11 am–1:30 pm SOLD OUT
Join instructor Michael Wright in a five-week drawing workshop focusing on portraits from the museum’s permanent collection. Work from paintings, sculpture, photographs, and life with an emphasis on the development of eye-hand skills as applied to drawing the face.

Weekday Classes

Impressionistic Japanese Watercolor—Studio Session
Five Fridays: September 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23 | 6:30–9 pm
Create paintings that capture the essence of this luminous and softly colored medium taught by Hisako Asano. Participants will learn Japanese brush-painting techniques and how to create three-dimensional images with a single stroke.
Members $170, nonmembers $180
Five-week session; limited enrollment; art materials included in tuition.


 Intergenerational Classes for Students ages 5 to 105

Perfect for families or adults on their own, intergenerational classes present students of nearly all ages with the opportunity to learn about art and make art at the museum together.

One-Day Workshop: Daily Life in Pompeii
Saturday, June 27 | 9–11 am SOLD OUT
Travel back in time to ancient Rome with a private tour of the exhibition Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture around the Bay of Naples. Discover the importance of art and food in Pompeii.  Then, head to the studio to create your very own mosaic and taste a recipe from the first cookbook ever written, the 400 AD De re coquinaria (On Cooking). With educator and chef Maite Gomez-Rejon.
NexGen members plus one adult $50; nonmembers plus one adult $60
Art materials and parking fees included in tuition; limited enrollment.

  • No prior art-making experience is necessary.
  • To enroll, call the LACMA box office at 323 857-6010 or send in the Class Enrollment Form.
  • Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited enrollment.
  • All art supplies will be provided for the class.
  • We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes.
  • Refunds will only be granted if the class is canceled. Refunds cannot be given in the case of a missed class or if you elect to withdraw from the class after it has begun.
