Ever since modern artists like Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso popularized collaging, others have continued to push its creative boundaries, sometimes incorporating new technologies. During the rise of the punk scene, artists used collages and photocopiers to create zines, album covers, and even videos.
The exhibition Digital Witness: Revolutions in Design, Photography, and Film explores some of the new heights of collage, as seen in music videos such as Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” and Kendrick Lamar’s “The Heart Part 5.” In Jackson’s video, people are seamlessly collaged on top of one another, morphing from one face into the next. Lamar draws inspiration from this video, taking the concept even further. In “The Heart Part 5,” the viewer can no longer distinguish where Lamar’s face ends and another begins, achieving a seamless transformation.
This December, join us as we delve into Digital Witness, explore the evolution of collages over time, and examine how technology has influenced their development and art in general. We will then create our own collage pieces and design covers for our favorite albums, movies, and video games! Taught by artist Bianca Argueta.
