Free Members-Only Screening: Trance
For LACMA Film Club, Film Independent, and New York Times Film Club members only.
Few filmmakers can claim a career that moves so smoothly from stage to television to film screen, and effortlessly spans genres: from the druggie criminal underworld, to (reinvented for HD) zombie film, to real-life trauma-turned-triumph. In his first feature since the 2010 fact-based drama 127 Hours, Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle returns to the noir world with Trance, which stars James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel. The plot of Trance contrasts low life and high style with the feel of a 1960’s thriller starring Michael Caine. A young auction house assistant (McAvoy) finds himself involved with a group of criminals, led by Franck (Cassel), forced to adapt unusual tactics when a cache of cash is lost. Money, art, memory and hypnosis all play a part in the screenplay by Joe Ahearne and John Hodge (frequent Boyle co-conspirator whose relationship with the director goes back to Boyle’s feature debut, 1994’s Shallow Grave). Director Danny Boyle will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening to look back at a trajectory that includes the only time James Bond ever took second billing to a sitting Queen of England.
