Late Night: The Inquisitive Musician

Saturday, May 7, 2011 | 8 pm

Late Night at LACMA centers around a presentation of The Inquisitive Musician, a project by Los Angeles-based artist Cindy Bernard. An adaptation of a seventeenth-century German satire, The Inquisitive Musician explores the age-old battle between classically trained musicians and self-taught artists. Presented as a staged read at the museum's BP Grand Entrance, The Inquisitive Musician also features a video produced by Bernard specifically for this Late Night at LACMA performance. The cast features writer Dick Hebdige; composer Michael Webster, artist and musicians Dave Muller and Marnie Weber; experimental music bagpiper David Watson; and punk icon Mike Watt. The trio of David Watson (bagpipes, guitar), Tom Watson (guitar), and William Roper (tuba) provides musical interludes.
Accompanying the performance will be live sets by DJ collective dublab—represented by DJ Mtendere Teebs—along with a presentation of Pilgrimage From Scattered Points, the acclaimed film by Scottish artist Luke Fowler. Throughout the evening three exhibitions will be on view, including the recently opened David Smith: Cubes and Anarchy. A beer garden and sausage stand will also be open for Late Night refreshments.
