Female Surrealist Cinema: Performance and Montage
In conjunction with the exhibition In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States, LACMA will survey more than thirty-years of experimental filmmaking by women that delve into a rich netherworld of dark memories, primal sensations, double worlds, and marvelous visions.
The second program will focus on performance and montage, including Peggy Ahwesh’s decaying found-footage farrago, Joan Jonas’s hallucinogenic masquerade, Ximena Cuevas’s vibrant folkloric tableaus (in collaboration with performer Astrid Hadad), Chick Strand’s homage to Maya Deren, Leslie Thornton’s haunting view of childhood, and Shana Moulton’s playful new age bliss-outs.
