Point-of-View Gallery Talk: Conservation

Thursday, July 7, 2011 | 12:30 pm

As part of this quarterly series, senior paintings conservator Joseph Fronek discusses the extensive work done on a 500-year-old altarpiece currently on view in the galleries of European art. Depicting Christ surrounded by various saints, the panel’s images were almost impossible to see when first acquired in 1999, hidden under many layers of discolored varnish and grime. Months of painstaking work revealed vibrant colors and stunning details. Included will be an examination of photographs showing the panel before treatment.
