Zhang Roucheng, Traveling to the Sacred Mountain of the South

Page 1 of3:
Part Map, Part Landscape

This image is topographic in appearance. Like a map, it describes the surface features of the region, including hills, rivers, cities, and roads. Look for the small, neat script that identifies the important peaks, temples, and other sites.

Zhang, scroll detail

Despite its maplike qualities, this painting represents an idealized landscape. It generalizes the unique features of the region and includes many decorative elements. Notice the delicate shading in the mountains and trees and contrast between areas of great detail and open spaces. Look for areas where Zhang added soft washes of color.

COMPARISON Like Zhang, Thomas Moran was inspired by a dramatic landscape: Zhang Moran
