he reflective globe in the center of this photograph is a gazing ball, a garden decoration popular in the late 1800s. Set in a garden, the gazing ball would have reflected the ground, sky, and distant landscape surrounding it.

In a single photograph Seneca Ray Stoddard created both a portrait of a place and a portrait of himself at work. Look closely. Reflected in the center of the globe are the artist, his assistant, and the camera. In the distance are a lake and the Fort Henry Hotel, a popular tourist destination.
