Balch Art Research Library

The Mr. and Mrs. Allan C. Balch Art Research Library maintains an extensive research-level collection of approximately 175,000 books, journals, and periodicals. This noncirculating collection consists of monographs on artists and specialized art subjects; art reference books; collection and exhibition catalogues of museums, galleries, and private collectors; scholarly periodicals in the field of art and related areas; current auction catalogues; artist files; and material in related fields of study.

The library is open to the public by appointment only.

General Information

  • The Research Library is located on the L level of the Bing Center (one floor below the plaza level).
  • Public appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1 to 5 pm. Appointments may be made by calling 323 857-6118 or emailing library@lacma.org.
  • Search the Research Library's collection through PipeLine.
    Requests for materials must be made at least 24 hours in advance.
  • For reference questions, email library@lacma.org.
